nykeiko wears: Herve Leger for a wedding!

It's wedding season but this year, we only have one wedding to attend which happened a couple of weeks ago! Well there is another coming up this weekend for one of my friends in Montreal but I had to bail due to bad timing. We aren't really that close anyway but he wanted to make it like a cegep reunion of some sort which I thought was a great idea!

This year has really been all about babies more than weddings. Earlier this year, five of my friends had babies. All boys too..oh wait no,  a friend of mine in Hong Kong had a cute baby girl! Baby announcements are also streaming in...I saw on my Facebook about three new babies coming along and four more for 2016! Yup when we talk about this amongst our friends, we just accept that we're at this age group now where it's allll about them babies. Not only should we accept that one day we will be parents too but I can also see how exhausting and difficult it is to raise a kid, so, we are currently cherishing our freedom now until that inevitable day comes! More traveling please (which we have planned for September already! Yay!)

Nykeiko-Lover.ly Dream Day Style Challenge

I was approached by Lover.ly to take on the Dream Day Style Challenge. I already experienced my own dream day last year so this challenge was really just for fun.  Thinking about a wedding outfit with no wedding to plan and no budget restrictions is what makes it fun. I also got the chance to create my first collage ever (as obvious as it can be) on the blog.

Happy one!

We busted out Dave's old school Polaroid. The films are pretty old so the photo isn't that great!
So... we have been married for over a year now! We can now say that because we made it passed the one year mark (this past weekend) and it was breeze! For our special day (other than ditching the husband to do this), we made reservations for afternoon tea at the Palm Court at the Plaza hotel. This is where we went with our closest friends and family after our ceremony in Central Park last year. This weekend was actually the Palm Court's last weekend before they close for renovations so we got lucky. I'm curious to see if they will keep the classic look or modernize the Palm Court. After tea, we had plans to row a boat on The Lake but due to a long wait and a crowded lake, we opt to just veg by the Bow Bridge and do some people-watching. We giggled when boats bumped together or when people were rowing the wrong way; like the stern facing the front instead of the bow (I had to Google some boat terms to write this sentence.) It was a bit pathetic that some people didn't realize why it was ten times harder to row their boat while others seem to be leisurely rowing along without breaking a sweat. I mean, one couple looked like they were really struggling. Maybe they just wanted the challenge and work out their arms, possibly, who knows. Good workout though.

It was a simple yet really relaxing afternoon. It was pretty perfect to me. We would have stayed longer in the park but dinner reservations at The Red Rooster awaited us.

nykeiko eats: Anniversary = good food [Balthazar NYC]

On our wedding day...

Do you like to be reminded on how long you and your significant other have been together for?
Also, once you're married, do you still celebrate THAT anniversary or the new "day-we-got-married" wedding anniversary? Or both? Interesting... I get all types of answers. I almost forgot about THAT anniversary (we have been together for 4 years and married for 4 months!) but I have a good husband who reminded me when he told me that he made restaurant reservations for the occasion. If eating is in the plans, I would love to celebrate all our anniversaries please!

We enjoyed a delicious meal at french fare Balthazar. A classic New York restaurant opened back in 1997 in the heart of Soho. Dave made the reservation one month in advance to make sure we got a seat or else it's usually a long wait for walk-ins.

Thank you babe for always feeding me the good stuff!

Everything was yum especially the escargots which I never had coming directly out of the shell! It should always be served like this to preserve the tenderness and juiciness! The tartare was good and Dave's homemade fries were also good. I was sad we didn't leave any room for dessert because I would have really liked to try the lemon mille-feuille or the crème brulée! Oh well...next time right honey? *wink wink*

Thank You cards

Thank you card

I had already begun writing and giving out some Thank You cards mostly to friends who live in the city. On Saturday, I acquired this craft box full of stuff to make jewelry with at the Fred Flare closeout sale for only $2! Maybe $1, everything was estimated. So, I decided to put it to good use and added some cute touches to our thank you cards. I tied baker's twine which I also got at the sale for $1-2 and attached a gold plated ring with a brass seashell charm. I think it's super cute. I feel bad for to those who already received our plain cards but I gave them Ferrero Rocher along with the card so that makes me feel less bad :)

Our goal now is to mail them out by Thanksgiving. Sending the cards out on Thanksgiving would be excellent timing!

Thank YOU for reading!

xx

Wedding snapshots #7: The rings

Oops, this post is a bit late. I forgot to post this one from my post-wedding days...

Remember when I was all like blablabla it is so hard to choose my wedding band ? Here it is! It's in rose gold and sitting pretty alongside my engagement ring wrapped within Dave's wedding band.

Dave's wedding band is worth chatting about. It is a custom-made brushed white gold band with a rose gold line. My birthstone, a sapphire stone, is embedded in the inner side of the ring...

I like the side of my wedding band..the pretty grooves.

There was a bachelorette party! Part 2 of 3: Gettin' tipsy in the park and striking a pose (or 100)!

A while ago, I mentioned a bachelorette party was thrown for yours truly back in the city of Montreal. Part 1 of the bachelorette party, we drew a nude model at an art center which was so much blush-inducing fun! After that, we had the chance to all go home and change and then meet up again at a park in Westmount where my sister surprised us with a small picnic full of sweets and champagne. The spot she picked was decorated with small felt balls and balloons! We popped our first bottle of champagne right away and drank to the last drop of the third bottle a couple of hours later. We found out afterwards that we could have been fined a couple hundred for drinking in the park but when park cops drove by our spot, they didn't say anything (or did not see anything?). While all of this was going down (we wore props, blew bubbles, hula hooped, of course drank)  a professional photographer took pictures of us. I also got to take pictures with every single girl friend so that there could be a keepsake photo of us from that day.

There were a few other girls I would have loved to join our party but with everyone's busy schedule and also NOT living in the same city anymore, I know it is a difficult request. It just reminds me how I have to make the most of these special moments and keep these lingering warm memories in my heart when I return to New York far away from my friends.

As for part 3, I don't think I am going to post anything about that because I don't have any pictures from dinner :) We all went to this fantastic wine bar restaurant in Montreal's Old Port called Accords. We didn't really go for the wine but my sister picked this place because she thought the cuisine is probably not something I can easily find in New York. She was right. The food was delicious, mostly homemade and all the ingredients were seasonal and locally sourced . The current menu is almost completely different from what I saw back in June which is indicative that there's a creative chef behind the scenes. The food was really good and each dish comes with optional wine pairing. Most of us had too much champagne at the park and skipped the wine but I would love to go back again and try something else WITH wine. On the down side, the service was really extremely slow and the meal lasted almost 4 hours I think. That was a buzz kill since we were all so hungry but the food and desserts made up for it 100%.

I sifted through some pictures. I estimated 400 photos last time but I received over 1200 candid shots from my sister this past weekend! Here are a couple of my fave shots amongst too many...

Shake and pop the cork

My hands were too busy playing to drink

Thank you girls....especially Melissa for being the brains behind this Bachelorette operation.

Oh yea! Here's a "What I wore"!

Leather skirt by Alice and Olicia ($100 at sample sale)
Bracelet by Lulu Frost ($115 sample sale)
Silk top by Equipment (I forget the price I paid on eBay. $30?)
Hat was borrowed and no idea who it belongs to.

Married for a week....How do you feel?

Popular post wedding question: How do you feel? How is the married life?

I am still not quite sure how to answer that question politely except by answering with "same old, same old". I knew things or feelings would not change once Dave and I get married because in my head, I was already in a committed relationship and wasn't planning on going anywhere. Basically, committed without a marriage certificate saying so.  Dave and I have already been living together for over 3 years now and so there was no dramatic change in lifestyle. In fact, the night of our wedding, I was staying in a hotel with my sister while Dave was back at our apartment. No biggie. My boss joked: "You do not live in (h)sin anymore!"...honestly, I don't know many traditional couples nowadays. Most couples I know have lived together or even had kids before getting married.

What I feel right now is mostly relief. Relief that wedding planning is no longer our daily priority and then maybe I feel a bit different because I get to wear a new gorgeous wedding band :) One thing is for sure. I feel more loved because we got to spend some time with friends and family who have traveled from afar to celebrate with us. I cannot stop thinking about how I wish I had more time to talk to each and every person that night but based on every experienced bride I have spoken to, having the time to enjoy the wedding is a big challenge. With that being said, I am so so glad we also had a small ceremony the day before where we were joined by no more than 36 of our closest friends and family. We would have wanted more people but keeping it small is key to a more intimate and quiet wedding where everyone could enjoy themselves.

Our ceremony was held in Central Park. We asked everyone to meet us at a lovely gazebo by the picturesque Bow bridge at 1 pm sharp. The weather was seriously the most perfect weather we have had all summer especially after the intense heat wave and thunderstorms just a month ago. A couple of days before, they were predicting rain on our wedding day. I was so thankful beyond belief that everyone would be able enjoy this wonderful weather in the heart of Central Park with us.

Norman, our newly officiated officiant, did an amazing job keeping the ceremony light and humorous! We asked Dave's cousin to officiate for us and couldn't have picked a better person to share our special day. Not having to drag everyone to city hall is also a perk! We didn't say our vows to each other during the ceremony but I had a lot to say to Dave and decided to tell him privately later during the week.

Here's one cheesy pose for the cameras:
Norman's head sprouting from Dave's back

Following the ceremony, we took group photos in the gazebo with the bridge as our backdrop. We then headed to the Plaza hotel for afternoon tea. Most people walked the 13 street blocks with us in the park where we constantly received congratulatory cheers by strangers. We even came across some street performers who did a special dance which they promised if we did like them, would keep our marriage long and happy. Dancing included some grinding action if you wanted to know...kids probably had to shut their eyes.

When we arrived to the Plaza (on time! phew!), we were greeted and treated especially well. Our tables were reserved in the back of the Palm Court where afternoon tea is served daily. My wedding favors were already placed on the tables and a vase was ready to receive my bouquet, as requested. Hot flavored tea, iced lemonade for the kids and Veuve Clicquot champagne was served and 3-tier platters with sandwiches, pastries and scones soon followed. I was hoping everybody could finally just relax and enjoy their afternoon tea.

Our photographer Tony Yang joined us that day for a few hours to capture many of our precious moments. I hope to receive the pictures soon so I can share with you all. For now, my dad's amazing non-photoshopped pictures will suffice and satisfy my craving to gawk at myself in a white dress and pretty makeup. My makeup was as natural as it can be and I was very happy with it. Nancy Lan did an amazing job for me as well as my mom and sister. My big sister did her makeup at Sephora due to timing issues.

Did anything go wrong that day? Sure it did. Some mishaps happened like my sister and mom's hair appointment being cancelled accidentally and were squeezed in last minute.  My dress also got shredded right before the ceremony by my super embellished (and grabby) Marchesa clutch. All the beading and crystals on the clutch just ate up the silk on the left side of my dress. That could have wrecked my day but I didn't freak out too much. I also stepped on my dress at some point and ripped a big hole in it. With a semi-ruined dress, nothing flustered me since the day was beautiful and I was just damn happy...that there was no rain.

Quick details about my look...
Dress: Morgane Le Fey dress ($100 purchased here)- The dress was altered by Dave's mother. She added the halter strap and waist band.
Shoes: Jimmy Choo ($75 purchased here)
Necklace: ... was my something blue. Sapphire given to me by my hubby for my birthday last year.
Earrings: Diamond earrings gifted by Dave for birthday. Dangling crystal earrings by Judith Leiber ($50 purchased on sale).
Hairpiece: Vera Wang hairpiece with Swarovski crystals ($5 at this sample sale).
Clutch: Marchesa ($300, purchase at this sample sale). Not shown anywhere in pictures since it ate up my dress and I tucked it far away.

I love me a good wedding photo booth! [Magnolia photo booth] #hsinianddavid

Magnolia photobooth Co. #hsinianddavid

I was so happy to have had Magnolia photo booth at our venue for our wedding reception. I think everyone had a good time in the booth and everyone's pictures looked soooo GOOD! Great props? Flawless skin? Four different poses? YES! YES! YES!

I'm so glad we went with Magbooth. At first, we wanted to save some money and so we looked at different options out there. Compared to 3-4 real photo booths that would work with our budget (I emphasize real because many "photo booths" are really just a fancy camera set up in front of a curtain + printer and not a true physical photo booth), we decided to stretch our wallets a little and get the one we really loved which was Magnolia and my first choice.  Honestly, the photo booth doubled as entertainment and our wedding favors for our party of 320+ guests and if the pictures turned out great, then our guests are most likely to keep it for themselves. I've personally tucked away many wedding photo booth pics because they were not flattering at all.

The whole process of getting the photo booth was easy. We were able to design the banner on the photo strips with the help of their in-house graphic designer. Some last minute changes we wanted to do with the font was not applied but no biggie since everybody is looking at their pictures anyway and not the banner! Aaron was our photo booth attendant for 4 hours that night (sorry you were not fed!) and he even let us start earlier since he was able to set up quickly. Even with the extra time, some of my friends did not get a chance to get into the booth but that's our fault for not warning them that the booth was shutting down at 11 p.m. We opted out of getting a photo album but got our CD with pictures yesterday! Thank you Magbooth!

My only regret is not having the time to get into that photobooth more myself! I guess some is better than none! Enjoy!

Some of my coworkers totally taking advantage of the booth's props!

A wedding was had...

and I am still in the decompressing phase... Thank goodness I took some days off. I will return shortly.

My dad has been taking photography classes (at the age of 70!) and he was able to capture some pre-wedding preparation shots in my hotel room. I loved my bouquet...and they look sooo much better in pictures!!
