nykeiko eats: Fitzcarraldo..Rustic Italian farm to table experience [Williamsburg, Brooklyn]

New yorkers are busy, busy people and it is always hard to meet up and catch up with friends during the week so we all look forward to the weekend where we can sleep in and then get together for brunch offered at many of New York's restaurants.

We rarely do brunch but amidst the chaos of juggling work and attending fashion shows, having a relaxing Sunday brunch was welcomed for me. We checked out Fitzcarraldo in Williamsburg recommended by Dave's cousin who has been there for late night drinks. At first, I was skeptical of the 5-item brunch menu as we are so used to having an array of choices at most restaurants. Well, it turns out, it is not about the quantity but the quality. The food was great. The crunchy artisanal bread with Italian salumi,  the spicy potatoes and the sweet caramelized French toast were all so delicious. We would highly recommend this cozy rustic place in the heart of industrial Williamsburg, located right next to the now closed 3rd Ward building. Next time, I want to try the brunch cocktails. The Kir Royale which had crème de cassis and Prosecco sounded tentalizing. We were also interested in coming back for the $35 tasting menu for dinner. We hope this place never closes.

nykeiko eats: The Elm [Williamsburg, Brooklyn]

Isaac Mizhari spotted at The Elm
Soooo Dave and I have been eating out a lot lately but I like to believe that we have been really good about cooking at home as well. Also, we like to find excuses to celebrate; like every stepping stone in our life. It could be for a raise, a bonus, a promotion, signing of contracts or most often, just because!
Most of the time, it is just because we enjoy good food and drinks and dates (when there's candlelight, it's a date!!)

Michelin-starred chef Paul Liebrandt's The Elm makes its debut in 2013 in Williamsburg and is getting a lot of buzz. We went to check it out last week. Dave made reservations for The Elm just before the Christmas holiday without letting me know. He wanted to snag prime dinner hours on a Friday night.

The food was anything but simple yet delicious. Fresh ingredients and aromatic flavor combinations under one bite. Each bite tasted different. It kind of reminded me of Montreal's French cuisine.

The dishes were small so we ordered 4 dishes to share from the Raw, Land, Sea and To Share menu.

Love this table made out of all these type of wood!

I liked the bourbon maple mulled wine cocktail I ordered.
Delicious cocktails

Raw: The Beer tartare
Land: Duck with pomegranate jus
Sea: Skate with capers and green grapes
Share: Lobster Cassoulet. Traditional slow cooked stew with beans.

nykeiko eats: Williamsburg eats- Pâtes et traditions ~ Southern France cuisine [eat NYC]

Sultan Savory crepe - Pâtes et Traditions -nykeiko.com

If you want to find a place to brunch or dine in Williamsburg and don't want to spend a fortune or simply craving French crepe, I recommend Pâtes et Traditions! This small cozy eatary is always bustling with hungry eaters and a long wait is inevitable so we never got a chance to try it on Sunday when the wait was miraculously only 10 minutes.  They serve traditional South of France dishes which I'm not really sure what exactly that is. I was most interested NOT in their crepes, but their pâtés platter and delicious looking mixed green salad (I love salads). However, they did not serve the pâté platter for brunch but the waiter was nice enough to ask the kitchen staff if they can prepare it for me which totally made my day. I used to eat pâtés all the time back in Montreal so to me, it's like comfort food which is makes me smile. On top of the pâté plate, I got a large Niçoise salad with hard boiled egg, tuna and anchovies as proteins and Dave got the Sultan savory crepe which had chicken, bacon, cumin, cream, swiss, onions, garlic and mint! It was yummy! I actually didn't enjoy my salad because they used canned tuna but I manage to finish it all. I really should have tried their crepes since it is their speciality and all their savory crepes which comes with salad were $9 during brunch time! My pâté platter was $14 and salad was $12. I don't think I made the cheapest choices!
They also serve sweet crepes which I'd like to try some day to appease my sweet tooth.

Smorgasburg and Renegade Craft fair in Williamsburg, oh my!

Top: Stylemint/Shorts: Rag and Bone/Sunglasses:Burberrry/Bag:Rachel Nasvik (ofakind edition)

After being tortured by the heat wave, drained with a day of thunderstorms, we finally get perfect weather in time for the weekend. We expected clear blue skies so I decided I would wear all blue to match :)

This Saturday, I went to Smorgasburg (not again!) and then right next door at the Waterfront park was the 8th annual Renegade Craft fair which I had no idea was happening this weekend. How did I miss that?! It's like Etsy coming to life and you can touch, feel and try everything you once saw online. There were old and new vendors compared to last year and some new vendors I have read about so I was excited to see some of the things in person. I couldn't capture the essence of the fair in pictures so I decided to make my first vlog about the fair!

In June, Bedford Avenue was shut down 3 Saturdays in a row for Williamsburgs Walks. I very much enjoyed walking in the middle of the street ... Arts, games, music and freshly rolled out grass was prepared for everyone to enjoy.

Part of my summer 2012 to-do list is to take my SLR out to play. I now treat you folks to enticing pictures of food and fun!

Smorgasburg:
Paella
3 cheese grill cheese
Fish taco

Must have the Dumont milkshake!

nykeiko eats: Another weekend full of feasting- Williamsburg's Smorgasburg, ISA and Pies and Thighs

Smorgasburg
We had gorgeous weather for Easter weekend and it was also the first weekend Brooklyn Flea and Smorgasburg resurged from a long winter's hibernation and we did not want to miss it ! Smorgasburg had all these new food vendors that we didn't see last year and the area in general looks more organized especially with the new recycling and waste bins placed all around the venue! I scarfed down a big hot dog from Meat Hook for $5 and it was delicious. My sister had the one with cheese in it which cost $5 but was suppose to be $6. We had the usual Blue Bottle coffee and tried a couple of new things like overpriced 'Smores'..I had Greek feta cheese salad and Dave had this pulled pork type bun from a vendor I don't remember.

Sorry we didn't take any picture of uneaten, untouched food. we were just too hungry and I only thought of taking the picture once we bite into it. If it wasn't good, I don't usually want to take a picture so biting comes first most of the time unless it's pretty.
Bruleed Smores

Once we filled out tummies with goodies, we headed to Soho for my sister to take advantage of NY shopping and no taxes on clothes below $110. We also checked out the new Georgetown Cupcakes from DC that just moved into Soho. There was a long line so we just took a peek and continued shopping.

Sis end up contemplating between two trench coats. One from Banana Republish which I liked alot and another from Michael Kors which suited her but we both agreed the color was not as nice. She opt for the Michael Kors which was a more casual look and a hat, useful for rainy days. Both coats were Made in Vietnam and water resistant and close in pricing too.

Lady-like Banana Republic trench

Michael Kors- lovely on her!

I was looking for bright jeans and loved the orange skinnies I tried on at Rag and Bone but was not sure about forking out $176 for a pair of seasonal colored jeans. Still thinking about them though and they were really comfy and stretchy!

Four hours of Soho-ness later where I was well-behaved and only bought a rose bath bomb from Lush, we headed hungrily back to Williamsburg for dinner at ISA.

I made the reservations through Open Table and made a special request for getting seats with a view of the kitchen. At ISA, all the food is prepared in front of the restaurant and nothing is prepared in the back so we can't see waiters or chefs spit in our food if we became demanding.

The menu was small and original. A tasting menu was also available.
There were only two main entrees to pick from.

Dave ordered a thyme cocktail
Apetizers were delicious and original!
Fresh calmari with ink

Fresh raw scallops with kumquats and ice

Beef tartare, sunchoke and flax and cremefraiche

Duck liver and heart with sweet potato,  onion and 'dirt' which was coffee grind

inky leftovers
The mains:
Pork loin main entree with baby beets, pasnip and green onion

Fresh Mackerel with  celeriac

Out tummies were nicely filled but we definitely saved place for dessert and  so we headed to Pies N' Thighs for some pies and ice cream. Obviously, when we got there, Mel had to try their famous fried chicken and I was craving Mac N cheese so... we got just that plus a donut, deep fried caramel pie and ice cream from home! It was dinner #2 I guess.

Homemade donuts and pies

Comfort food! This is why it's a top fav resto in Williamsburg

The next day, Dave and I returned to Pies N Thighs where I had the big bowl of salad to offset the food we had the night before but Dave choose the buttery and greasy fried chicken biscuit which is also very good. Oh, and we also got a free rich chocolate donut because our waiter is awesome.

Big salad for $10
This donut tasted more like cake and was super rich in chocolate flavor!
